Abstract

The authors present the design and performance of a 1. 6-GHz GaAs FET linear power amplifier developed for use in a digital ship earth station to be introduced by INMARSAT around 1990. The amplifier has achieved 25-W output with 23% dc-to-RF power efficiency - 16. 5 dBc third-order intermodulation product, and 2. 5% dB AM-to-PM conversion coefficient. The amplifier has been developed with the aim of avoiding a serious spectrum regrowth in a band-limited QPSK signal. Test results for QPSK signal transmission through the amplifier have exhibited an acceptable degradation in the bit-error-rate performance and an acceptable level of out-of-band emmission.
