Abstract

We make a review of the variational formulation of nonequilibrium thermodynamics as an extension of the Hamilton principle and the Lagrange-d'Alembert principle of classical mechanics. We then focus on the case of open systems that include the power exchange due to heat and matter transfer, with special emphasis on reacting systems which are very important in biological science.
