An information-centric multiple-source routing scheme for wireless sensor networks

Abstract

In wireless sensor networks, Information-Centric Networks (ICN) are used as the next generation network architecture to perform non-TCP/IP communications. Meanwhile, Disruption/Delay Tolerant Networks (DTN) architecture has solved the problem of unable to communicate caused by frequent interruptions, node mobility or lacking of energy by storing the requested data in nodes' memory. However, the users are still inevitable to experience long time latency. This character is unable to satisfy the applications with high real-time requirements. Multiple-source routing technology can make the users get data from any node selected in multiple sources, which can obviously optimize the time latency. Currently multiple-source routing scheme is still an open issue for DTN. To address this, a Service and Information Oriented Network Architecture (SIONA) based multiple-source routing scheme is proposed, where SIONA is an ICN network architecture extended over TCP/IP architecture supporting well node mobility and multiple source routing. The format of DTN data block is optimized to adapt to the SIONA architecture. The structure of the node is optimized and multiple-source routing scheme is lead up to DTN. Using this scheme, every user chooses the information source having the shortest time latency. The information ever requested is stored in nodes on the routing path. Once other users request the same information, the nearest node is selected to offer information so that time latency is shortened obviously. Evaluation and analysis show the efficiency and advantages of the proposed scheme.
