An Ontology-Based IoT Communication Data Reduction Method

Abstract

In IoT systems, large volume of data such as sensor data from various devices could be transmitted from gateway to the cloud side. Therefore, it is required to perform processing such as data compression on the gateway to reduce communication cost and ease communication delay. In this Work-in-Progress paper, we propose a method of reducing the amount of communication data. In this method, we assume a situation in which the gateway side hold SSN ontology, domain ontology and its instance respectively, and transmit annotated data according to its structure. Basic idea is that at the gateway side we prune data structures for insignificant data, and at the cloud side, pruned data structures are recovered using ontology.
