Abstract

Optical absorption spectra of high-dose irradiated fibers were observed. The decrease of the 630nm band and the appearance of 550nm and 660nm bands were discovered in samples irradiated to 10 Mrads or over. But the 630nm band increases in high dose irradiated fibers when the launching numerical aperture is reduced or when a lead fiber section is welded to the sample. This seems to indicate that when the fiber is irradiated to a high dose, there occurs non-uniform distribution of defects in the core glass.
