Abstract
The world is facing several challenges that must be dealt with in the coming years such as efficient energy management, need for economic growth, security and quality of life of its habitants. The increasing concentration of the world population into urban areas puts the cities in the center of the preoccupations. Indeed, on 2% of the earth's surface, cities actually use 75% of the world resources[1]. Currently more than half of the world population lives in cities and the urban areas of the world are expected to absorb all the population growth expected over the next four decades while at the same time drawing in some of the rural population. These facts make naturally the cities important actors for the world's sustainable development strategy.
