Abstract
The main subject of the following essay is to describe the encounters of some modern German poets with the haiku. Although this very unique form of Japanese poetry was mentioned before in various anthologies published at the end of the 19th century, it has only been accepted by German poets like Rilke or Goll in the 1920s. Since Rilke wrote only a few haiku, Goll with his « Modern Haikais » must be considered as the first real German haiku poet. Most interesting in this case is the way Goll, a poet by himself, used and developed the limited number of syllables in a new way in a challenge to express the modem world's phenomena.
