Control of texture in Al 2 O 3 composites by slip casting in a strong magnetic field followed by heating

Abstract

A textured microstructure in ceramics is one effective way for improving their properties. We have already reported that textured alumina can be obtained by slip casting in a strong magnetic field followed by sintering. This processing was applied to the SiC(whisker)-dispersed Al 2 O 3 and ZrO 2 -dispersed Al 2 O 3 composites. Textured Al 2 O 3 matrices with the c axis parallel to the magnetic field were developed in the composites. However, it was impossible to confirm that the alignment of the SiC whiskers and ZrO 2 particles as a dispersed phase in the composites occurred.
