Octahedral FePt nanoparticles were prepared by the alternate deposition of FePt and MgO layers on MgO(001) single crystal substrates. The formation of highly ordered L10 structure with the  orientation perpendicular to the plane was confirmed by X-ray diffraction. Cross-sectional transmission electron microscope observation clearly showed that the size of the octahedral FePt nanoparticles can be controlled by the repetition number of FePt and MgO layers.
