N2 - The project of high-level radioactive waste (HLW) disposal is attracting greater attention in Japan and advanced countries. The success of HLW-project is the key issue for sustainable nuclear energy system. This paper especially focuses on the geotechnical development on HLW disposal in Japan. This paper presents the new design method of bentonite-buffer material from the viewpoint of "self-sealing ability" as one of the technical development. The design method presented in this study is based on the author's new theoretical research results. This paper also shows a trial design of buffer materials from the viewpoint of self-sealing.
