Determination of fluoride and bromide ions in fogwater by ion chromatography.

Fluoride and bromide ions in fogwater were studied at an altitude of 700m on Mt. Oyama (1252m a.s.l.). Concentration ranges of fluoride and bromide were 9.28~209 μg 1-1 and 0~120 μg 1-1, respectively. Concentrations of both ions were higher than those estimated by the sea salt ratios, which shows that these ions originated not only from sea salt but also from other sources. The effects of volatilization of HBr from sea salt (Br loss) were also observed in the composition of some fogwater. A positive correlation coefficient (r = 0.84) between NO3-/Na+ and Br-/Na+ indicates the influence of bromide exhausted from automobiles on fogwater.
