Development of a traction system for the gauge changing train

Abstract

This paper describes a novel traction control system for the electrical motive units (EMUs) of Gauge Changing Train (GCT) which can run through the different two gauge (width of the two parallel rails) sections. Some of the new traction control ideas are introduced, which are implemented for the state-of-the-art EMUs with downsized direct drive type permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) for traction purpose at five different supply voltages in Japan. The paper also illustrates the test results to verify the novel traction system and the specified control system for the GCT.
