Abstract

A new type of the Multi-Pixel Photon Counter (MPPC), sensitive to Vacuum Ultra-Violet (VUV) light (wavelength <150 nm), is recently developed and produced by Hamamatsu Photonics K.K.. We have successfully achieved direct detection of liquid argon (LAr) scintillation light (wavelength = 128 nm) using this device without any wavelength shifter. We first measured basic properties (temperature dependence of gain, cross-talk, after pulse, etc.) at cryogenic facility at Waseda university. We have also estimated the absolute photon detection efficiency (PDE) for LAr scintillation light emitted from 241Am α-ray (5.5 MeV) source. Finally, a possible application of the new MPPC to LAr detector for dark matter search is discussed.
