Dynamic behavior of a steel pipe sheet pile foundation during liquefaction in the revetment

    Abstract

    The damages of foundation likely caused by the liquefaction due to a reduction of the soil strength and/or the lateral movement of liquefied layer observed in the past earthquakes. Under strong earthquakes the slope ground is expected to be unstable and it is possible that the lateral spreading pressure of the ground occur at the same time with the loss of soil strength in liquefaction layer. This research aims to study the dynamic behavior of Steel Pipe Sheet Pile (SPSP) foundation and its effect on superstructure performance in a large slope. A 1-G shaking table test with scaling 1: 60 was conducted on a flat model and a slope model of 15°. 2-D numerical modeling was also employed by an effective stress analysis. The experimental and numerical responses between two models clearly represented the significant effect of the ground slope on the dynamic behavior of SPSP foundation and the superstructure.
