Abstract

The effect of carbon underlayer thickness on read-write characteristics and crystalline structure of magnetic layer for the perpendicular single layered medium were investigated. Thin film media of CoCr18Pt6Ta3/CoCr40/C were prepared on NiP/Al substrate by DC-magnetron sputtering at substrate temperatures of 200°C. Magnetic properties were determined using a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The read-write characteristics were observed using the MIG head for writing gap and MR head for reproducing gap length. Medium noise was obtained by subtracting the system noise power from the integrated value for the total noise power.
