Abstract

This study aims to examine the effects of thermal mass on the cooling capacity and surface heat flux of radiant systems under solar radiation. The building model was based on ASHRAE Standard 140 and EnergyPlus was used to simulate a single zone building equipped with radiant floor cooling. A comparison was done for different chilled water supply temperatures (16 °C, 18 °C, and 20 °C) and water flow rates (10-50 L/min). It was confirmed that there is a time difference between solar heat gain and actual system cooling capacity. It indicates that until the total heat gain by the floor surface is completely removed by a radiant cooling system, the water flow rate has a significant impact on radiant cooling capacity enhancement under high-intensity solar radiation.
