Abstract

Electrical breakdown strengths in copolymers of ethylene and various aromatic monomers (styrene, 4-phenyl-1-butene, etc. ) are investigated. (1) Impulse breakdown strengths, Eb, of all the copolymers are higher than those of Homo PE. (2) In the case that the comonomer is styrene, Eb of the copolymer is 25% higher than that of Homo PE at the content of 0. 22 wt%. Above this content, Eb decreases with increase in content. (3) It can be interpreted that Eb is determined by the competition between the positive factor due to the resonant energy absorption and the negative one due to the interruption of crystallization.
