Abstract

Electrical parallel-to-serial converter (PSC) using metal-semiconductor-metal-photodetectors (MSM-PD) and application to bypass/drop self-routing was discussed. The 1 × 2 bypass/drop self-routing of 10 Gbit/s burst optical packets was demonstrated using the 4:1 converter. The PSC has various advantages like compactness, easy fabrication, low power consumption, scalability for MSM-PDs and suitability for integration with other electrical circuits.
