Abstract

The monolayer micrographite films, of which the lateral dimensions are in the order of nanometer, have been grown on TiC(111)-faceted and TiC(410) surfaces by chemical vapor deposition. Diffraction spots due to the graphite lattice have been observed for TiC(111)-faceted surfaces, but not for (410). Angle-resolved ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (ARUPS) spectra of micrographite on the faceted surface have shown a series of peaks due to the π states of graphite. On the (410) surface, quantized π branches of graphite ribbon with the narrow terrace of 0.886 nm appeared. Any other state characteristics of the micrographite, such as edge state near Fermi level, was not observed for both systems.
