Examination of natural esophageal mechanical properties for the design of an artificial esophagus

Abstract

In order to promote peristaltic function in the patients with the end stage of esophageal cancer, we have been developing an implantable artificial esophagus. Surgical treatments, such as gastroesophagostomy, are applied for alternative reconstruction in the patients, however, the peristaltic motion will be eliminated. In this study, we focused on the distributed function in the native esophagus and examined stress-strain characteristics from proximal to distal portion using freshly extracted goat’s esophagus. Prior to the measurement, we developed a new tension test apparatus. As a result, we could evaluate the circumferential esophageal characteristic variations. Then it was suggested that the circumferential stress analysis might be useful for more sophisticated design of artificial esophageal specifications, which would be consistent with the physiological demand as well as the passive structural effects.
