Experimental and numerical evaluation of boundary layer ingestion effect with engine/airframe integration model

Abstract

Boundary layer ingestion benefit is experimentally and numerically investigated. Simple 2-dimensional-airfoil shape airframe with electric fan configures an airframe/engine integration. Wind tunnel test was conducted with force measurement. Accompanying CFD calculation was conducted with a solver FaSTAR developed by JAXA. Experimental result shows that both of the 2 BLI configurations give larger forward thrust than referential nonBLI configuration with same power consumption. The difference between the 2 BLI case results was investigated. CFD result shows quantitative agreement with the experimental result, though performance metrics is different.
