Abstract

In telecommunications networks, switching systems play an important role in realizing various services. The SPC (Stored Program Control) technique has been introduced to realize the varied ESS (Electrical Switching System) functions. However, large scale software development and maintenance have become critical. In an ESS software system, service facilities depend on call processing software. In the coming ISDN age, new network service function requirements will increase and become more diverse and complicated. Accordingly, the more rapid development of call processing software is vital in preparing the way for these highly integrated digital networks. This paper describes an expert system for the design of call processing software. The system is named the State transition diagram design expert system (STATES). It is intended to support design and prototyping of call processing software by employing SDL/PE (CCITT SDL state-oriented version using Pictorial Elements).
