Abstract

The contra-directional coupling between waveguides with a large difference of effective refractive index Δneff was investigated in order to extend the operational range of an optical add and drop multiplexer, which consists of vertically stacked semiconductor waveguides. Numerical calculations were performed, and the contra-directional coupling between the waveguides with a large Δneff was experimentally confirmed. The operating range of the device was successfully extended by more than 40 nm by using dissimilar waveguides with Δneff of 3%.
