Less is more with ultrathin nanocoatings

Abstract

Rigoberto Advincula shares his view on the application of thin coating to achieve the high-performance thick layer using environmental friendly polyelectrolyte water-based ultrathin nanocoatings. Polyelectrolytes are soluble polymers having periodic charged groups in the main chain or as a side group. Two polyelectrolytes of opposite charged can produce a complex polyelectrolyte pair when mixed with each other that can precipitate from solution. Dilute solutions of each oppositely charged polyelectrolyte, wash solvent, and the prepare surface or substrate are required to achieve this type of coatings. Repetition of this process can achieve an ultrathin film made of multilayer stacks of polyelectrolytes. This is a 'green' process because it can be done without any disposal of organic solvents or volatile organic solvents. This method can be used for fabricating robust, complex, and functional thin-ultrathin coatings.
