Abstract

An artificial intelligence based smart relay theory is described. With the emergence of AI technology, promising applications for the development of relay logic rules in a systematic way has become feasible. The paper focuses on one particular application - detection of an out of step condition in power systems. Power system simulations in conjunction with the induction and abduction methodologies of AI technology were employed to develop the out of step tripping relay logic based on local measurements. Due to an automated design process, it will be possible to run many transient stability cases and pass the results through the induction and abduction programs for the design of the relay logic.
