NITRIDATION OF SEPIOLITE BY CARBOTHERMAL REDUCTION.

    Abstract

    The preparation of nitrogen ceramics by carbothermal reduction has been studied. This letter reports the reduction and subsequent nitridation of sepiolite, which is a fibrous clay mineral of magnesium silicate, to discuss the possibility of the synthesis of nitride from SiO//2-MgO composition. It is concluded that nitridation occurred by carbothermal reduction of sepiolite and that fibrous Si//3N//4 was obtained owing to the experimental conditions.
