Abstract

Recent work on optical isolators for fiber communication is reviewed. The function of optical isolators for single mode light propagation is achieved by using the Faraday effect. Many structures have been proposed for isolators to integrate the functions of polarizer and Faraday rotator, whose materials are different. We devised a high performance polarizer made of a birefringent wedge. It simplified the isolator without polarization dependence. We described broadening of the wavelength region with high isolation and the increase of the isolation.
