Optimization of robustness and connectivity in complex networks

Abstract

A general framework for complex networks based on two parameters, p and g, which regulate the growth and preferential attachment used in network construction is presented. Within this framework, exponential and scale-free networks represent two corners of the parameter space. It is found that the benefits of p, with regard to interconnectivity and robustness to failure and attack, outweigh its costs, while those of g do not.
