Optimization of thermotropic liquid crystalline polyester performance

Abstract

Although all-aromatic liquid crystalline polymers (LCPs) offer a unique combination of high heat distortion temperature (HDT), inherent flame resistance, and excellent melt processability, this emerging class of engineering thermoplastics remains at its infancy. Significant attention has been devoted to the elucidation of structure-property relationships for all-aromatic and aliphatic-aromatic liquid crystalline polymer products. Recent efforts have also focused on the utilization of insitu infrared (IR) monitoring in the liquid crystalline melt for the elucidation of the polymerization mechanism. This presentation will highlight important synthetic and analytical issues for the successful preparation of thermotropic liquid crystalline polyesters. Morphological characterization will focus on the relationship of macromolecular composition on the orientation of liquid crystalline fibers. Atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission optical microscopy (OM) were utilized to define the fibrillar structure in melt extruded fibers.
