Abstract
To develop the high performance thermal protection technologies for atmospheric re-entry vehicles, NASDA has been conducting research on the erosion mechanism of the Carbon/Carbon (C/C) materials with CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposited)-SiC thermal protection coatings. The oxidation and erosion phenomena had been made evaluated to find that the quality of CVD-SiC thermal protection coatings is one of the important factors. High purity CVD-SiC samples were prepared in this respect. The static heating tests have been performed to compare the oxidation phenomena with those of the C/C materials. The similar phenomena to those of the C/C materials were observed(1). The experimental methods of the static heating tests have been improved to investigate the oxidation and erosion phenomena more precisely. The reasonable erosions were observed in respect to the oxidation phenomena of CVD-SiC. This paper describes the improvements and newly acquired outcomes.
