Preparation of nanocarriers containing SOD mimics and their anticancer mechanism

We have reported the anticancers effect by metalloporphyrins as SOD mimics on the cancer cells. Metalloporphyrins as SOD mimics convert intracellular O2 - · to H2O2 and it reacts on iron porphyrins to form OH · by Fenton reaction. Finally H 2O2 and OH- generated by the metalloporphyrin are expected to cause cell death. We have prepared novel liposomes containing metallporphyrins showing SOD activity. The liposomes were composed of DMPC and their size was less than 100nm. The liposomes showed a significant cytotoxicty for cancer cells when compared with cisplatin and metalloporphyrins.
