Rubbing detection of sliding bearings in early stage by frequency modulation analysis

Abstract

It is important in maintenance to detect rubbing of sliding bearings in the early stage. An experiment on mild rubbing conditions was conducted, and the changes in vibration were examined. Importantly, a newly found fact is that peaks in the spectral domain with respect to the rotational period occur as a result of rubbing. Consequently, cepstrum analysis was shown to be effective for the detection of rubbing in the early stage. A device that can follow the level of the quefrency was developed based upon this idea. Utilizing the device is a highly efficient way to monitor the condition of a sliding bearing.
