Abstract

A computer control system for the concurrent control of shape and profile of strip from the head to the tail end in the finishing train of a hot strip mill has been developed and applied to the tandem six-high mill at Yawata Works and pair-crossed roll mill at Hirohata Works. Before designing the computer control system, a strip rolling simulator for a tandem mill was developed, the control characteristics of the tandem mill were analyzed and valuable findings were obtained on the configuration of the computer control system. A method was devised for measuring the profile of strip by scanning the strip edges which enabled the on-line high-speed measurement of strip profile.
