Abstract

A computer control system for the concurrent control of shape and profile of strip from the head to the tail end in the finishing train of a hot strip mill has been developed and applied to a tandem six-high mill. Before designing the computer control system, a strip rolling simulator for a tandem mill was developed; the control characteristics of the tandem mill were analyzed, and valuable findings were obtained on the configuration of the control system. A method devised for measuring the profile of strip by scanning the strip edges allowed online, high-speed measurement of strip profile. The computer control system comprises two control functions, namely, concurrent shape and profile feedback control and head-end bad shape predictive control. The control system has proved very effective in controlling both shape and profile of the strip and has achieved a degree of accuracy that cannot be achieved by preset rolling alone.
