Significance of maximal oxygen uptake as health related physical fitness in elderly people

Abstract

This study was conducted to make it clear whether V̇O2max is health related physical fitness or not in elderly people. Thirty one volunteers (male n=13:mean±SD 67.2±4.4yr, female n=18:65.4±3.1yr) participated in this study, V̇O2max was estimated using submaximal exercise test protocol with treadmill. The risk factor of circulatory diseases, such as blood sugar, total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, triglyceride, and %fat, and total health score calculated as the sum of risk factors showing within normal range were used for the index of physical health status. The questionnaire with sex, age, drinking (yes or no), smoking(yes or no), history of diseases, and habitual physical exercise (total energy expenditure was calculated from the data of event, frequency, and time for a week) was applied to the subjects. The relationship between each risk factor of circulatory diseases or total health score and V̇O2max or total energy expenditure were examined using simple and multiple linear regression models. The results were as follows; 1) Simple regression analysis showed that there was no significant relationships between V̇O2max and each risk factor of circulatory diseases, but significant relationship between V̇O2max and total health score (p<0.05). 2) Multiple regression analysis showed that V̇O2max was significantly related to total health score, when it was adjusted for sex, age, and history of diseases. 3) Multiple regression analysis using sex, age, history of diseases, drinking, and smoking for the adjustment showed no significant relationship between V̇O2max and the total health score. 4) The relationships between total energy expenditure and each risk factor of circulatory diseases or total health score were not significant in either analysis. These results suggest that V̇O2max might be a significant index showing medical health status in the elderly. The significance of V̇O2max as a health related physical fitness doesn't seem to be an independent index, but to be an index reflecting overall daily living conditions and lifestyle.
