Abstract

The melt drag twin-roll caster (MDTRC) was devised for the high-speed strip casting of mushy solidification type aluminium alloys. The MDTRC enables A5182 aluminium alloy to be cast at a speed of up to 60 m/min. The MDTRC combines a low separating force, semi-solid forming at the upper side of the strip and the use of copper rolls and requires no lubricant. In addition, the MDTRC can be used to cast Al-Mg alloys having a Mg content of up to 10 mass%.
