Abstract

Surface of a Ge-doped silica core of optical fibers etched by chloric acid was investigated under a scanning electron microscope. The core made by the VAD method has an inhomogeneity of 20˜ 100 nm, which is not seen in the core made by the C VD method. Preservation of the structure of fine glass particles where SiO2-GeO2 mixture surrounds SiO2is considered to cause the inhomogeneity.
