Abstract
The study of high-Tc superconductivity is now reaching a turning point twelve years after its discovery. In this review paper, high-Tc superconductors are characterized from the viewpoint of their material properties and the origin of the difficulty in understanding their underlying physics is clarified. The current statuses of the major targets of high-Tc studies are briefly described, with emphasis placed on the papers in this special issue.
