Abstract
The demand for multimedia communications is increasing, and the structure of networks carrying information data of different nature transmitted from various sources via the same channel is considered to be important. The scheme in which data of variable length are divided before their transmission is effective in increasing the efficiency of channel utilization. On the other hand, problems such as increased overhead added to each divided block are left unsolved. In this paper, in order to realize high throughput channels without the need for division of the data, variable-length data are transmitted in a fixed slot. The generated blank portions are effectively utilized, and superior characteristics are shown to be achievable in the proposed variable-length data access with capture (VDAC) scheme. The results of theoretical analysis taking variations of data length in retransmissions into account show improvements in comparison to other schemes.
