Abstract

The variation in electron-donating ability of smectites was investigated by photoreduction of methyl viologen. Methyl viologen-smectite (synthetic saponite, sumecton SA, synthetic hectorite, laponite XLG; and natural montmorrillonite, kunipia F) intercalation compounds were prepared. The investigation showed that the methyl viologen intercalated in sumecton SA and laponite were photoionized by UV irradiation.
