400 Gbit/s (20×20 Gbit/s) dense WDM transmission using soliton-based RZ signals

400 Gbit/s (20×20 Gbit/s) wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) transmission over 2000 km with a channel spacing of 0.8 nm using pre- and periodic dispersion compensation scheme and dispersion flattened fiber (DFF) is demonstrated. A bit error rate of less than 10-9 is obtained for all the channels after over 2000 km transmission. The transmission scheme is quite effective to increase the number of channels keeping higher channel bit rate in ultra large capacity transmission. Transmission distance seems to be limited by the signal-to-noise ratio after the transmission. Small effective area of around 35·m2 of DFF prevents increasing the signal power level.
