A novel approach for preparation of γ-Fe2O3 nanoparticles: Successive reduction-oxidation in reverse micelles

A novel approach for the preparation of γ-Fe2O3 nanoparticles based on successive reduction-oxidation in reverse micelles is reported. In this method, γ-Fe2O3 nanoparticles are formed via chemical reduction of ferrous or ferric ions by a reducing agent such as NaBH4, N2H4, or NaH2PO 2, followed by successive oxidation in reverse micelles. The generation of nanoparticles is caused by the "electroless deposition" in reverse micelles, and it was found that the crystal structure and the magnetic properties of the products depend on the redox potential of the reducing agent and the catalytic activity of the metal surface. In the case using NaBH4 as a reducing agent, highly crystalline γ-Fe 2O3 nanoparticles were successfully synthesized.
