A series of past works on structural optimizations of train car bodies were done by the authors to improve crashworthiness. There a concept of crushable body similar to that of automobiles was introduced and a simple model with lumped masses and nonlinear springs was adopted to know the macroscopic dynamic behaviors in car collisions. Then the parameters of nonlinear springs in crushable zones to specify the load-deformation curve were determined optimally to improve crashworthiness. It was also found it difficult to realize such optimum properties by making use of ordinary structural members only and additional use of energy absorbing structural members might be inevitable. Thus specified members with various holes are considered in this study to absorb collision energy. The positions and geometric dimensions of the holes are optimally determined to meet the optimum properties of nonlinear springs. The results confirm the effectiveness and applicability of those types of specified members to real train car bodies,
