Ellipsometry has demonstrated the sensitivity of polystyrene-polyacrylic acid (PS-PAA) adsorption to both pH and salt concentration. The equilibrium adsorbed amounts are greatest at low degrees of ionization or high ionic strength, while lowest at high degrees of ionization and low ionic strength. Furthermore, the adsorption is reversible. Increasing the pH at low salt concentrations forces chains out of the adsorbed layer reducing the adsorbed amount, observed with both ellipsometry and quartz crystal microbalance (QCM).
