Arsenic behavior in deep-sea sediments from Nankai trough

Arsenic (As) behavior in between interstitial water and sediments of deep-sea cores from Nankai Trough, located at off-shore Japan, were studied to understand the relation to biological activity at the early stage of diagenesis. High As concentration of sediments was recorded at about 350 m depth, where the most of As would be originated from detrital minerals supplied via turibidite from Honshu Island. Pelagic sediments in accretionary prism contained rather smaller As compared with the turbidite layers. Those facts indicate that the subareal insoluble materials are the major source of As in the marine sediments. While, the peak maximum of interstitial water As was at 200 meters below seafloor probably due to decomposition of algae/plant, suggesting that the biogenic As is mobile in the sediments.
