Behavior of liquid crystalline acetylenic compounds at the air-water interface

In this study, three substituted acetylene compounds, which are known to form nematic liquid crystalline phases in the bulk, were chosen to see if they would form Langmuir films (insoluble monolayers at the air-water interface). It has been shown that stable monolayers of substituted acetylenic monomers can be formed at lower temperatures for each compound studied. It is also possible to vary the behavior of the monolayer by using blends. Each compound has a maximum surface pressure at which it is stable for deposition on a substrate. Indeed, monolayers of one compound (III blended with IV) have already been successfully deposited.
