Three-dimensional (3D) silica monoliths (HOM-type) show promise to new frontiers in materials science. Here, we reveal a real evidence of the possibility of the instant direct-templating synthesis to control ordered cubic Fd3m geometry with supermicro- and nano-scale pores by using a number of cationic surfactants as templates. In the synthetic system, the addition of long-chain alkanes (≥ C10-alkane) crucially affected the mesophase structural changes from hexagonal (P6mm) MCM-41 to cubic (Fd3m) HOM-11 structures. Our simple method in the context of synthesis time (in minutes) and in composition domains shows key facts of control design of ordered cubic Fd3m mesophases with shape- and size-controlled cage pore geometries.
