The study reported in this paper was to examine the feasibility of circulatory maintenance with a single artificial heart (SAH). SAH is a pulsatile blood pump inserted between the left atrium (LA) and aorta (Ao) after removal of natural ventricles with a shunt placed between the right atrium (RA) and pulmonary artery (PA) using a homograft. If the natural heart is left intact, SAH bypasses fibrillating ventricles from LA to Ao. This study was performed in acute experiments to evaluate the possibility of circulatory maintenance with a SAH and also to determine the hemodynamic and drive conditions, and in chronic experiments (Study 2) to maintain a total circulation with a SAH for a prolonged duration.
