The catalyzing processes were investigated as a method of controlling the magnetic properties of perpendicular magnetic recording media fabricated by the electroless plating method. It was found that after acid processing of the substrate, perpendicular magnetization films with high coercivity were deposited in the initial stage of growth (up to about 500 angstrom) magnetization rotation is the main mechanism of magnetization reversal. The difference in the magnetic properties of films with and without prior acid treatment originates in the different microstructures while the film is still thin. In particular, it is thought that the high coercivity of films prepared after acid processing is probably due to the presence of fine, highly crystallized particles existing within grains. The sizes of grains also change when acid processing is performed, because the latter causes a change in the density of active nuclei. It is concluded that selection of the catalyzing process is a useful means of controlling the film magnetic properties, those of the initially grown in-plane magnetization layer in particular.
