Dark energy in the most general scalar-tensor theories and their observational constraints

In the Horndeski' most general scalar-tensor theories the background and perturbation equations are derived on the flat Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson- Walker background. We then discriminate between theoretical models of dark energy from recent observations. We place bounds on dark energy models from the distance measurement data of supernovae Ia, cosmic microwave background, and baryon acoustic oscillations. We also show that the recent measurement of the peculiar velocity of galaxies is powerful to constrain modified gravity models.
